I have been assigned by an academic class entitled New Media and Learning to participate in digital forms of expression. At the present moment I do not have much to 'express' nor do I wish to go through the insecurities and perfectionist streaks of attempting to 'present myself.' If done right this blog wont be about me even if its medium is my own rants and its limits are my own limits - such as a tendency to not stick it out with these sorts of things (which might be based as much on my own lack of self-discipline as it is based on the fad-nature of certain digital modes of communication).
Rather than presenting myself - my likes and dislikes, my hobbies and guilty pleasures, an up-to-date list of which coffee shops I've visited and which movies I've seen - I would like to take the time to present my discoveries as I learn about and interact with different new media technologies. I cannot guarantee that these discoveries will be sensational or riveting, newsworthy or even twitterable, all I can approximate towards is thoughtful reflection tempered by a lighthearted spirit. It is in this manner that that I pay homage to writer David Foster Wallace in his fun and prfound takes on otherwise mundane and everyday events such as cruise ships and county fairs (see his A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again).

Great premise -- and gotta love the title of your Blog! Too true that there is a great deal about new media that is "untwitterable"!
ReplyDeleteI love your line: "nor do I wish to go through the insecurities and perfectionist streaks of attempting to 'present myself.' I bet the first day "get to know each other" focus of each class is supremely painful for you. :)
